How to spot an inflated discount
Five checks that separate a real price drop from an inflated reference price, using the product's own price history and current market price.
Written and reviewed by DealsChecked Editorial Team
Written for shoppers using the references listed below. Product prices, eligibility, and checkout terms can change, so confirm the final order details with the merchant.
Short answer: a large percentage is not enough. Compare the current price with dated observations, equivalent products, the exact seller and variant, and the actual dollar saving.
Five evidence checks
| Check | Useful evidence | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Dollar saving | Reference price minus current price | A dramatic percentage saves very little money |
| Observed history | Several dated prices for the exact ASIN | The “deal” price appears most of the time |
| Comparable product | Same capacity, model generation, and included accessories | The anchor exceeds better-equipped alternatives |
| Seller and variant | Same seller, size, color, and condition | The comparison mixes different listings |
| Promotion lifecycle | A clear start and end with later price movement | The same “limited” offer renews continuously |
Worked comparison
Product A is shown as $100 down to $50, but its recent observed prices are $52, $50, and $51. Product B is $80 down to $60 after several $80 observations. Product A has the larger advertised percentage; Product B has stronger evidence of a real recent price drop.
How DealsChecked uses high percentages
We display the listed reference price and calculate the percentage, but we do not label a reference price “fake” from the percentage alone. Offers at 40% or more are counted below as a review sample, not as proof of inflation.
What this analysis does not prove
A suspicious anchor is not automatically deceptive, and a short price history is not a complete market history. The method helps prioritize further comparison; it does not establish merchant intent.
