How to choose between the two-zone and four-zone systems

Both are current DELLA 230V multi-zone heat pumps with the same cold-weather heating limit, so the comparison isolates zone count, area, efficiency, refrigerant and installation work against price.

Before opening either offer, list the rooms that need their own head and measure the distance from each to where the outdoor unit will sit; DELLA advises a professional HVAC technician for line sets over 25 feet.

Rooms and area covered

DELLA lists the Serena Series 18000 BTU Dual Zone system with two 7K indoor units for up to 600 sq. ft. DELLA lists the Vario Series 35000 BTU Quad Zone system with four indoor air handlers, one 9K and three 12K, for up to 2050 sq. ft. DELLA does not say which room sizes suit each head, but 7K is the smaller head size and 12K the larger. The Vario's heads add up to 45,000 BTU on a system DELLA names 35000 BTU, and DELLA does not explain how capacity is shared when all four run; its site also lists a 45000 BTU Quad Zone with the same heads, so check the model name at checkout.

Efficiency, refrigerant, heating and installation

DELLA lists SEER2 22, 230 volts, R-32 refrigerant and heating down to -13°F for the Serena 18000 BTU Dual Zone system. DELLA lists SEER2 19, 230 volts, R454B refrigerant and heating down to -13°F for the Vario 35000 BTU Quad Zone system. DELLA lists a $0.00 Without Line Set option for the Serena 18000 BTU Dual Zone system, with 16, 25, 33 and 50 ft line sets at $55, $90, $140 and $240. DELLA lists a $0.00 Without Line Set option for the Vario 35000 BTU Quad Zone system and advises consulting a professional HVAC technician for line sets over 25 feet. DELLA gives its mini splits a 1-year limited warranty, with lifetime parts coverage when registered within 100 days, and says labor costs are not included.

Who should buy each system

Buy the two-zone Serena for two bedrooms, or a bedroom and an office, of up to 600 sq. ft. combined. Buy the four-zone Vario when four rooms each need conditioning, or when a larger living area needs a 12K head. Budget for line sets and installation on top of each system's price; the $1,557.99 figure is only the difference between the two systems.

Other multi-zone options we checked

DELLA also sells a three-zone system. DELLA's 27000 BTU Tri-Zone system with 9K, 9K and 18K heads is a ceiling cassette mini split rated up to 1800 sq. ft. Its recessed ceiling cassettes are a different kind of indoor unit, so we did not compare it with the Serena and Vario air handlers here. We also checked another brand. MRCOOL lists its DIY 4th Gen 2-Zone condenser at 18000 BTU cooling with SEER2 21.2 and pre-charged quick connect line sets, and says it heats down to -13°F. Pre-charged lines suit a DIY install, but that system has no current offer in our feed.
