We suggest taking note that the HM311 Amazon title lists 36 hours of runtime, while DREO's official website specifies 32 hours; we rely on the manufacturer's 32-hour rating. In our view, if your room connects to an open hallway or kitchen without a closing door, you should size up to the next model because air circulation dilutes humidity across open spaces.
Warm mist or cool mist
DREO's HM717S page lists an 8L tank, 80 hours of runtime, a maximum mist output of 550ml/h, an applicable area of 600 sq. ft. and warm and cool mist. DREO's HM717S page says the warm mist temperature adjusts from 113°F to 130°F and lists app, touch and voice control. DREO's HM311 page describes it as a cool mist humidifier and says it provides up to 32 hours of moisture without refilling. We suggest choosing the HM717S if you want slightly warmed moisture to take the edge off a chilly bedroom in mid-winter. In our view, cool mist is entirely sufficient for general humidity relief, and the HM311, HM524, and 747S operate strictly as cool-mist humidifiers.
HM717S or 747S for a large room
In this snapshot the Smart Humidifier 747S costs $0.03 more than the HM717S. DREO's Smart Humidifier 747S page lists an 11-liter capacity, a floor area of 700 square feet, 100 hours of runtime, 21 dB and app, remote, touch and voice control. DREO's 747S page says that in Auto Mode it stops adding moisture when it reaches the room humidity target, and that it shuts down automatically when water is low. An FAQ on DREO's HM717S page gives a room size of 215–430 ft² for best results. We suggest paying close attention to the discrepancy on DREO's HM717S page, which advertises 600 square feet in its main specifications but lists an optimal room range of 215 to 430 square feet in its FAQ. In our view, the 747S is the better fit for expansive living areas requiring heavy moisture and quiet operation, while the HM717S is best reserved for large closed bedrooms where warm mist is specifically desired.
Humidity level and cleaning
The EPA advises not humidifying above 50 percent relative humidity, cleaning portable humidifiers every third day, and using water with low mineral content, such as distilled water. We suggest taking the EPA's cleaning and maintenance guidelines seriously to limit mineral buildup and growth in the water tank. In our view, models equipped with built-in humidity regulation or Auto Mode, such as the HM524 and 747S, make it easier to keep humidity from climbing above that 50 percent threshold.
