Quick answer: Understand when a price appears automatically and when a promo code must be entered, plus how to verify which offer applies to your cart.
Short answer: an automatic discount needs no text entry; a promo-code offer requires the exact code in the merchant’s promotion field. Treating one as the other is a common cause of a missing checkout discount.
Side-by-side comparison
| Offer type | What you do | Where to verify | Common failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic discount | Select the eligible item; enter no code | Product page and final total | Wrong variant or seller |
| Promo code | Copy and enter the exact code | Promotion field and final total | Eligibility, whitespace, or redemption cap |
| Bundle condition | Add the required items or quantity | Cart terms and final total | Cart does not meet the threshold |
Why the distinction matters
Mixing the two creates confusion and failed purchases. DealsChecked labels each offer type and places code requirements near the price and CTA.
Bundles and conditional offers
Some offers depend on buying multiple items or selecting an eligible variation. Those conditions should be stated separately rather than treated as a universal percentage discount.
Worked example
A $100 item with a 20% automatic discount should reach $80 without a code. A separate “20% with SAVE20” offer should remain $100 until the code is accepted. In both cases, taxes, shipping, and account-specific credits can still change the final amount.
What this comparison does not prove
The offer type explains the expected mechanism, not whether a specific account qualifies or whether multiple promotions will stack.
